Канадская группа Mullmazzler была основана в 1998 году Джеймсом ЛяБри (Dream Theater), послужной список которого, пожалуй, смотрится более скромно по сравнению с другими членами этого коллектива. Другими стали ударник Майк Мангини (Extreme, Steve Vai, Annihilator), клавишник Мэт Гилрой (Dallis Dilema, Explorers Club), а также басист Брайан Беллер (Dweezil Zappa, Steve Vai, Beer for Dolphins) и гитарист Майк Кинели (Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Beer For Dolphins). Как показало время и опыт – Джеймс это вполне достойный человек, который может спокойно попросить помощи у музыкантов мирового масштаба. Положительно также то, что он не привлёк никого из Дрим Театра, и решил всё сделать своими силами и силами своих друзей. Однако, играет эта группа несомненно прогрессив, а потому уйти от аналогий с Великими никак не получится. Но сначала – качество записи отличное, вокал ЛяБри как всегда на высоте – звонкий, мягкий и в то же время мощный. По жёсткости музыка является на 50% металом, а на остальные пятьдесят просто прогрессивным роком. Касательно аранжировок, тут дело обстоит ещё интереснее. Весь альбом в целом, не назовёшь органичным и цельным, поскольку на нём можно спокойно встретить темы наподобие того же Dream Theater , и темы также совершенно новые и оригинальные, это, например введение в обыкновенную проговую палитру элементов джаза, арт рока (а как же без него!), и даже чуть-чуть треша. Таким образом, имеем очень разнообразную и интересную работу, технически сложную и мелодически своеобразную. Не забывают парни, и писать настоящие хиты, к коим я отнесу открывающий атмосферный номер «His Voice», самую тяжёлую композицию на пластинке «Stated», эпическую и прозрачную песню «Shores Of Avalon», а также мощный боевик «Guardian Angel». К сожалению, на диске кроме хитов присутствуют и весьма посредственные с мелодической точки зрения вещи, но в общем же «Keep It To Yourself» может заинтересовать всех поклонников великолепного Джеймса ЛяБри. |

Сольный проект James LaBrie из Dream Theater. Воистину в этом году ребята оказались не в меру плодовиты. Итак, имеем альбом типа Images and Words по звуку, но не дотягивающий до него по музыке. Нет, по технике все безукоризненно, но Слишком много идей, и ни одна из них не закончена, единственное что видно сразу - у ЛаБри огромный потенциал, который он понемногу уже начал раскручивать. Из композиций могу особо посоветовать короткую и выразительную His Voice и тяжеленную как для прогрессива Guardian Angel, смысла текста которой честно говоря не понял, напоминает ранний Iced Earth !!! Есть и полуджазовые композиции, но лучше бы он их в отдельном проекте делал, а не здесь, так как они не очень вяжутся с общей направленностью альбома. |
